SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJORS: ARTS AND CULTURE
What is it?
It is a specialized component of a degree that focuses on the Arts. It is a special seal that is linked to your Diploma (OSSD)
Who can apply?
Any Gr. 10 or Gr. 11 student who is interested in the arts and is planning/taking 4 senior arts credits. (Drama, Visual Arts, Media, Photography, Music, Musical Theatre, Dance, Graphic Design etc.) We are ultimately looking for serious candidates who are willing to put in the time and commitment to attaining this certificate.
When and how do you sign up?
You need to get an application permission letter from student services or Ms. Kasper(who is SHSM contact person). You need to get your parents to sign the letter and return it to me or student services. It is better to sign up in grade 10 so that you can plan your timetable accordingly.
What happens if you change your mind?
There is no academic penalty and no financial cost. You can withdrawl at any time.
SHSM Arts and Culture Requirements:
4 Senior Arts Credits / 2 credits in Gr. 11 and 2 Credits in Gr. 12 (Check course counselling sheets available from Ms. Kasper)
2 Other credits (Including Grade 12 English plus one course from the Gr. 11 or Gr. 12 course counselling sheets
2 Coop Credits ( Can obtain one from Peer Tutoring and other from Experiential Learning in the Arts (ie. performing or helping in a community theatre, voulunteering or working at a Photography Store etc.)
3 Mandatory ( First Aid & CPR, plus WHMIS)
3 Optional ( ie. Stage Combat, Imprvisation, Puppet Making, Soap Stone Carving, Song Writing etc. - course change from year to year and are available at FSS)
Reach Ahead Activities (ie. Field Trip, Arts Camp or Course)
Ontario Skills Passport - completed in Gr. 10 Careers Course or on line before you graduate(Should retain copy for portfolio)
Any Gr 10 or Gr 11 students interested in enrolling in the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Arts in Culture see me at the beginning of the new semester. I am in Room 160 at the end of the tech hall.
GRADE 11 & 12 SHSM students already enrolled need to contact me about coop opportunities available during or after school hours.
