Post Secondary Information

Please carefully read through the information below which describes a variety of options available for students following high school graduation. We have tried to be concise, yet thorough, in the presentation of this information. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Danny Lalonde, (lalonded@limestone.on.ca), Grade 12 counsellor at Frontenac Secondary School.

Thinking of taking a Gap Year?

There are two wonderful employment services in Kingston who have special programming for students and recent grads looking to hone their employability skills and find successful employment or explore a career area.

Universities and Colleges Introduction

Without an opportunity to visit fairs and info sessions as a group, we’d like to offer the following general information for access to universities and colleges around Ontario and across Canada.

Information about college programs in Ontario is available at Ontariocolleges.ca. Click on “Programs” and search by school, area of study, or key word. This site is handy because students also apply to college from this same website. College application opened on October 1st.

There is a virtual college fair on November 4th from 4-8pm and November 5th from 9am-1pm. Register online at: www.ontariocollegefair.ca.

Of special interest, St Lawrence College is having drop-in sessions that will be relevant to students who hope to attend college locally. The upcoming sessions are:

University @ College

Aside from certificate and diplomas, most Ontario colleges also offer university degrees. This includes some programs that are comparable or better than traditional university programs, including business and nursing, among others. It’s worth exploring these options. Guelph-Humber is a hybrid school that offers 7 different university degrees with excellent employment prospects and co-op and internship opportunities in every program.

For specific information about programs for Ontario universities, link to

Ontariouniversitiesinfo.ca. You can click on “Programs” and search by topic, sort by university, and see pre-requisites and grade ranges for admissions. This website is an easy hub for this information rather than fish for it on individual university websites.

Application for university is done through the Ontario University Application Centre – or OUAC. They are linked at www.ouac.on.ca. Full-time high school students apply to the 101 application. They will need a PIN number that is usually provided by the school. This year, those PIN have been sent by mail directly from OUAC. If you have not received your PIN number, please see Mr Lalonde asap and you can get your own PIN. OUAC has provided the following promotional links:

Scholarships, Grants, Bursaries, and Awards

Please visit the awards page. on our website with updates about application to the most common scholarships. Be aware that it is not uncommon for only about 1% of applications will see money from general national and other scholarships. Scholarships are merit-based, meaning that you will have an average above 90% and a list of accomplishments to brag about.

More funding is available through program specific awards at universities (less-so at colleges), and many marks-based-only entrance awards are automatic. Check with the awards page of each university and college for more information. Some scholarship and award information deadlines can be very early. See your guidance counsellor in cases where you need to be nominated.

The Ontario Student Assistance Program or OSAP is where most funding for students will be found. Student apply for this government program in the spring. The date changes from year to year, but is usually in April or early May.
