<p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">March 6 Newsletter</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Spring is in the air. This is a time for renewal, change and for warmer weather, especially after this long winter. We will hold Wiarton Willie to his promise for an early spring this year! Although we often celebrate the success of all our students, we are particularly proud of our cast and crew of Treasure Island; A New Adventure. This week saw the culmination of months of planning, rehearsals, designing the sets, construction of props, as well as welcoming the next generation of Falcons through our Specialist High Skill Majors programs to highlight our passion for the arts at FSS. Frontenac athletes also participated against some of the top wrestlers in Peterborough and swimmers in Windsor through OFSAA competition. Our girls curling team will have to wait until after March Break for their OFSAA competition in Thunder Bay. A reminder to all of our parents that our </span><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Parent/Teacher night will be held Thursday, March 26th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm</strong></b><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">. The booking of appointments will open next week at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 11th. We look forward to seeing you all then.</span></p><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Student Trustees for 2026/27</span></h2><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Congratulations to FSS students Victoria McCourt and Mathew Katz for the appointments as LDSB student trustees for the 2026/27 school year. Mathew will be filling the role of the Urban Student Trustee and Victoria will be the Indigenous Student Trustee. Mathew wants to "specifically hope to be able to work on issues related to environmental sustainability and anti-racism. Ultimately, I want to ensure students’ voices are heard and meaningfully represented." Victoria "would like to help celebrate and honour the Indigenous students in the Limestone District School Board. I look forward to helping create more opportunities for Indigenous students and I want our youth to feel proud of who they are and their Indigenous identity." Please see Ms. Pixley for transfer forms to be eligible to play spring sports. Congratulations to our girls hockey team that had a thrilling semi-final victory over Holy Cross to reach the city final. Eventually, a short handed lineup fell to Napanee in the finals to earn a silver medal in KASSAA sports. After winning EOSSAA in February, Frontenac Swimmers headed to Windsor this past week for OFSAA. OFSAA swimming sees over 2000 athletes and our Falcons placed 24th out of the 308 teams from across Ontario. Our Open Girls team (Skylar Kalverda, Jordan Noonan, Olivia Serson, Emma Gow and Mae Gillis) not only brought home the bronze medal in their free relay but also finished third in all their events combined. New to OFSAA this year was the mixed free relay where Greta Kalverda, Evelyn Moore, Sam Gurd and Ty Huddleston placed fifth overall. That was just one of Greta's three top ten finishes as she placed fifth and sixth in her individual events. Our 16 other athletes experienced many personal bests with our relays dropping up to twelve seconds off their qualifying time. After a stop/start season plagued by snow days and tournament cancellations the team finished strong! In only our second season, we finished 2nd in the team event at EOSSA, narrowly losing to our rivals at Holy Cross Secondary School, while advancing 9 athletes to OFSAA. Adrienne Johnson, Jenna Gallivan, Jenna Martin, Mia Mack, Jorgie Bearisto, Hewitt Closs, Michael Dobeich, Carson Monk, and Wyatt Chase proudly represented our school at provincials in Peterborough, with Jenna Gallivan, Jenna Martin, and Wyatt Chase advancing to the Championship round before being eliminated by formidable opponents, or in Jenna Martin’s case, flying out to Vancouver to compete for Team Ontario Rugby!</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Falcons coaches, Mr. Chapman, Mr. Tremblay, Jason Howes, and Clara Ryan are incredibly proud of all our wrestlers, who consistently demonstrate sportsmanship, camaraderie, and determination in pursuit of their goals, qualities that symbolize life at Frontenac Secondary School!</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We wish our graduating wrestlers; Isaac Parks, Brandon Tailferer, Mia Mack, Jesslyn Howard, and Eden Howes continued success in their future endeavors. Their professionalism, preparation, engagement and willingness to challenge themselves in a competitive environment truly reflected the strength of our programs and the dedication of our staff. Participating in the Skills Competition requires courage, commitment, and countless hours of practice. Whether students earned medals or simply gained valuable experience, their efforts deserve recognition and celebration. They have showcased not only their technical skills, but also their confidence, resilience, and school pride. Recognizing these accomplishments reinforces the importance of experiential learning and helps inspire future competitors. In total we sent 18 students to compete in Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, Cabinetmaking, Automotive Service and team construction events held at St. Lawrence College. Two of our students brought home gold medals and will have the opportunity to compete at the provincial skills competition in Toronto this spring. Ben McDonough won in Electrical Installations, and Aodhan Woogh-Dunleavy in Plumbing. Winning silver medals were Griffin Elliot in Automotive Service, Alex Bulch in Electrical Installations, and Xavier Lasko in Plumbing. Bronze medalists were Anderson Smith in Cabinetmaking, Meghan Benoit and Zayn Ibn-Ali in Team of 2 Carpentry, and Declan Cowan in Electrical Installations. Senior leaders worked with students in our feeder schools to highlight some of the opportunities and activities that a Specialist High Skills Major can open pathway opportunities for. Frontenac is proud to offer four Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Sectors :</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Arts & Culture (good for teachers, graphic designers, architects etc.)</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Business - only school in board to offer this sector (retail and marketing careers)</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Construction - (trade related and apprenticeship programs)</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Health & Wellness (health care or fitness careers)</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">All of these programs offer expanded opportunities for students in that specific sector. For example, First Aid /CPR certification, Health & Safety certification, Elective workshops, Experiential Learning through Co-operative Education placements, and Reach Ahead activities that all provide training, skills and experiences for the next step after high school. Experiences can be programed for all pathways including Workplace, College or University. Students are asked to not park in spots reserved for staff. These spaces are indicated by two signs on either side of the main entrance to the school. We have lost several parking spaces at the school due to the volume of snow this winter, particularly at the very northeast portion of the Frontenac parking lot. We have noted that some students and visitors are parking at the northeast corner of the building (near the gym entrance) in non-designated parking areas. This is creating a "pinch point" for other vehicles and makes it impossible for busses to get through this area when they arrive near the end of the day. We are asking everyone to not park here and are encouraging people to use the spaces at the back of the school, including the outdoor basketball court. By using these spaces, this should solve the majority of problems. At peak times (morning drop off, lunch and at the end of the school day), we encourage all families, staff and students to be cautious and patient.</span></p><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">FSS School to Community</span></h2><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Each year, the Frontenac School to Community class organizes the Acts of Kindness initiative around Valentines day. Students and staff are asked to share a kind message on paper hearts about an individual or a group of students that demonstrate kindness through everyday or extraordinary interactions at FSS. At the end of the AoK campaign, the collective acts are shared in the main foyer at FSS for all to see how doing small acts of kindness can make a powerful impact on the community overall. As well last week, our student athletes, along with their PALs competed in a Bocce ball tournament against other schools in the Kingston area. These contests, organized by the University, challenge students to think critically, solve complex problems, and apply their mathematical reasoning skills in creative ways. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and dedication our students showed in representing our school. The school year will begin with a P.A. Day on September 1, 2026, with the first day of classes for students on September 2, 2026. Highlights of this month have included our Black History Month event in the library , where students enjoyed a variety of delicious home made foods, and enjoyed hearing the story from Queen's University Equity Ambassador Bisola Olaseni and our Grade 9 Healthy Relationships Workshops, where various community partners and members of the FSS Ophelia group discussed Relationships: the good, the bad and the ugly with our grade 9 students. We are also having a number of our winter sports teams wrap up KASSAA and EOSSAA competition with some of our student athletes preparing for all Ontario championships. The event included food from different Black cultural groups such as Nigerian and Jamaican, music by African artists, some multicultural trivia from the FSS Trivia Team, and a guest speaker. It was a great event to socialize with peers. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Among the events, the MCT also invited Bisola Olaseni, Lead Equity and Ambassador from Queen’s Health Sciences Outreach & Summer Program. She came in as an African-Canadian speaker, who came to Canada as a young child. She described her life in Canada so far, and gave some inspiring words about discovering one’s place in their community and motivating students to find their passions and be ambitious in life. Olaseni said, “Coming to FSS felt like a full-circle moment, an opportunity to give back, to inspire, and to remind students that their stories, identities, and ambitions are valid and powerful.”</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The celebration had a major focus on spreading diversity as well as appreciation of African and black culture around the school. It was meant to be an informative event, but also a display of the creations of African peoples. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The event was a success. A lot of students attended the celebration, and conclusively were able to learn more about black culture and discuss among their peers. Vrain Rikhi, founder of the MCT, expressed: “When I saw so many students come in, I mean there weren’t even enough seats, it really made me happy because it made our message more widespread.”</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Everyone on the MCT worked hard to create such an event. In particular, Gabi Macfarlane was one of the students who created the playlist for the event, which played over the course of the day. The music was a mix of many different African artists, and gave the students examples of different kinds of music created by black artists.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Macfarlane hopes that moving forward, more people will join the multicultural team. Not just people of colour, but people of many other different cultures, so everyone can work together and celebrate their own cultures, no matter what those may be. As a whole, the Multicultural Team wants to really leave a mark on Frontenac, to gather people that will keep the team going in future years, and to create a lasting change in the community that will create a welcome space for everyone.</span></p><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Student Services</span></h2><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Although students are just settling in to their semester 2 classes, the course request period for the 2026-27 school year is soon coming to a close! The winter sports season is the second and most complicated one to navigate with the winter holidays and exams creating natural breaks in the schedules. A further complication this year were the numerous snow days that caused the cancellation and postponement of KASSAA games and exhibition events. There are eleven KASSAA sports offered at Frontenac during the winter season. This year we had 229 student athletes and 34 staff and community coaches and managers. These hands on experiences help to deepen the understanding of the curriculum and to learn what life was like decades ago.</span></p><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">FSS Parking</span></h2><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">There have been a number of parking issues that have come to our attention recently. Students are asked to not park in spots reserved for staff. These spaces are indicated by two signs on either side of the main entrance to the school. We have lost several parking spaces at the school due to the volume of snow this winter, particularly at the very northeast portion of the Frontenac parking lot. We have noted that some students and visitors are parking at the northeast corner of the building (near the gym entrance) in non-designated parking areas. This is creating a "pinch point" for other vehicles and makes it impossible for busses to get through this area when they arrive near the end of the day. We are asking everyone to not park here and are encouraging people to use the spaces at the back of the school, including the outdoor basketball court. By using these spaces, this should solve the majority of problems. <p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Dear Families,</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">I hope everyone had a good, short week following the Family Day Weekend. We have had a small taste of warmer weather recently, though we know there may still be more winter days to come. As we head toward the end of February, I would like to share a few updates with Limestone families:</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">2026-2027 School Year Calendar</strong></b></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out the 2026-2027 School Year Calendar Survey. Approximately 3,700 responses were submitted from families, staff, and community members. We appreciate your time and providing the feedback.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">As shared previously, the school year calendar for 2026-2027 presents unique challenges, with Labour Day falling unusually late on September 7, and Easter occurring just four days after March Break. Across all three school boards (Limestone DSB, Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic DSB, and Hastings and Prince Edward County DSB) Option 1 was the preferred choice, and Option 2 ranked second and third, with only marginal differences in support.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Following further review of the potential calendars, and considering potential financial implications, it was determined that implementing Option 1 would create additional costs for all three boards. Given that Option 2 very closely aligns with Option 1, differing by only one day and without the associated financial implications, all three boards supported Option 2, with the school year starting September 1 (P.A. An overview of Continuing Education programs was provided, with a focus on the PSW program as a strong example of Ministry‑supported community partnership. Principal Myers outlined the six Continuing Education programs offered: International and Indigenous Languages, Adult English as a Second Language (ESL), Get Set (Skills Education and Training), teacher‑assisted self‑study/correspondence credits, fee‑for‑service interest courses, and the PSW program.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The PSW program, normally tuition‑based, has been tuition‑free for approximately five years through Ministry funding, currently committed until March 31, 2026. The program operates as a “living classroom” in partnership with the County of Lennox and Addington at the John M. Parrott Centre long‑term care home, supported through multiple funding waves, with an additional application pending. The accelerated five‑month program emphasizes dignity, respect, compassion, and real‑world learning, integrating students early into the long‑term care environment. The program includes 330 hours of theory and lab instruction, 110 hours of supervised placement, two additional 100‑hour unsupervised placements, and the opportunity to earn six secondary school credits where applicable. Successful completion of the provincial PSW exam is required.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Since September 2024, 78 students have enrolled, with a 71% completion rate and a 100% employment rate among graduates, exceeding provincial targets. Wrap‑around supports help reduce barriers by covering items such as scrubs, footwear, transportation, rent, and groceries. Strong provincial and local demand for PSWs was noted, particularly in light of upcoming long‑term care builds. The program meets provincial curriculum standards and has completed quality assurance certification. Ms. Turcotte spoke to the supportive learning environment, the value of the living classroom model, and the program’s focus on dignity, independence, individualized care, privacy, and safety. Ms. Xavier Vandermeer shared her experience as a recent graduate, highlighting the program’s high standards, strong supports, and impact on her personal and professional development.</span><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Chair McGregor thanked the team for their presentation and opened the floor to questions.</span></p></div></details><h3 class="editor-heading-h3" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Reports From Officers</span></h3><details open="false"><summary><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Chair's Report</span></p></summary><div data-lexical-collapsible-content="true"><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"As we gather for our February meeting, I want to take a moment to recognize the energy across our schools as we begin a new semester. Hallways and classrooms are buzzing, and it’s been wonderful to see students engaged in winter activities that support learning, well-being, and connection during these colder months.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Looking ahead, we will soon be launching our 2026-2027 budget survey. This is an important opportunity for members of the public to share their feedback and perspectives as we begin planning the budget for the next school year. Community input plays a meaningful role in informing our budget-making process, and we encourage families and community members to participate when the survey opens.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">I would also like to highlight Pink Shirt Day on February 25. Schools across the district will be recognizing this day as a visible show of our shared commitment to kindness, inclusion, and respect. That concludes my report.”</span></p></div></details><details open="false"><summary><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Director's Report</span></p></summary><div data-lexical-collapsible-content="true"><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Director Burra stated: “Good evening Trustees and the viewing public. It is hard to believe, but we are already a few weeks into the second half of the 2025-2026 school year. First term and first semester report cards have been sent home or are going home this week, secondary students are making course selections for next year, Choices at 9 programs have completed their processes, Choices at 7 programs will be making decisions soon, March Break is just around the corner, and planning is well underway for the 2026-2027 school year. Preparations for next year will continue to ramp up and we eagerly await the release of the budget for next school year that may well be delayed given Queen’s Park is in recess until March 23. I have a number of highlights and upcoming events that I would like to share this evening. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">One significant highlight occurred on February 4 just before our EPOC meeting when a Black History kick-off event was held at LCVI. While I know Senior Staff and some Trustees were able to attend the most of the event due to our EPOC meeting, there were several performances highlighting the significance of Black History in Canada and the local region. It should also be noted that this February is the 30th anniversary of Black History Month in Canada. A big thank you to teacher consultant Andrea Barrow and students and staff of LCVI for hosting this event. I should also note that the very impressive banners highlighting significant Black Canadians that were displayed at the event are now part of a travelling historical exhibit that will be making the rounds at different secondary schools this month and some elementary schools in the spring. Andrea Barrow has also created a range of resources to support Black History Month in LDSB schools, as well as resources to support curriculum delivery in schools.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">A significant upcoming event is what we are hoping will be an outstanding Skills Competition at St. Lawrence College next week on February 25 and February 26. Almost 500 Limestone students, Grades 4 to 12, will be participating across over 25 secondary events and six elementary events. The Skills Competition is yet another example of community partnership that showcases critical skills events and the local community college.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Winter KASSAA seasons have either ended or will be ending prior to March Break. Tomorrow evening the girls volleyball championships will be held at St. Lawrence College, and Friday evening St. Lawrence hosts the boys’ basketball finals. It should be noted that LDSB has one team in two of the finals and both teams in the other two finals.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">I would like to also highlight Limestone’s participation in larger community initiatives that involve multiple local partners in supporting more services for children and youth in areas across Limestone. The Unnamed Youth project and the ACES and Resilience Coalition of KFL&A. Both of these initiatives bring together partners to better serve children and youth. This is exciting work that provides hope and support for many youth requiring improved services and/or access to services.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">One final highlight that I will draw Trustees’ attention to is our continued emphasis on collecting voice from the communities we serve. Tonight, Associate Superintendent Gollogly will share an overview of the school year calendar feedback and look for Trustee approval of the 2026-2027 calendar. As mentioned by Chair MacGregor, in the next couple of weeks or so, we will be providing an opportunity for input on the 2026-2027 budget. Additionally we will also gauge interest from families in virtual school programming for next year. And finally, in the spring, all Limestone families will have the opportunity to respond to a family engagement survey. Limestone school communities and staff are critical partners, and our schools are representative of the communities we serve; we have a responsibility to be responsive to community voice and changing circumstances. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">And on a final note, I would like to thank all Limestone staff who contributed to the 2025 United Way campaign. We just received the final tally and LDSB staff contributed almost $50,000 to the campaign which provides critical supports to meet the needs of some of the most vulnerable people in KFL&A, including students and families we serve.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Thank you, Chair McGregor. That concludes my report."</span></p></div></details><h3 class="editor-heading-h3" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Reports</span></h3><details open="false"><summary><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">OPBSA Report</span></p></summary><div data-lexical-collapsible-content="true"><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Chair McGregor shared that she will be attending the OPSBA regional meeting scheduled for February 28, to be held virtually. The meeting will review proposed draft changes to the organizational structure including an opportunity to provide input regarding the inclusion of representation from each board at local regional tables. Following this meeting, the membership will vote on the proposed amendments on March 12, 2026.</span></p></div></details><details open="false"><summary><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Student Trustees' Report</span></p></summary><div data-lexical-collapsible-content="true"><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Student Trustee Ismail stated: “Good afternoon, Trustees and members of the public. We held our Interschool Council (ISC) meeting February 10, chaired by Mia Comeau and Rachel Kolosov. It was a special meeting to host elections for incoming Student Trustees for the 2026-2027 school year. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">This year, elections took place differently, as there were partial Tri-Board Transportation cancellations on that day. As a result, the elections took place in a hybrid format. Candidates were able to participate in the elections remotely or in-person to ensure the elections remained accessible for students. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We’ve had a total of 13 candidates; three Indigenous, four Rural, six Urban, who’ve shown interest and took part in elections for the Student Trustee. It has increased from previous years and shows that more students are feeling empowered to take part in governance and student leadership. During the election period, we had set a goal to increase visibility and the number of applications, made possible especially thanks to the efforts of the communications team. Within the Council as well, we have spent time during our meetings to brainstorm ways schools can raise awareness for the positions as well. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Last month, the Interschool Council was invited to support a board initiative connected to a provincial conference for Directors and Supervisory Officers across Ontario, centered on the theme Leaders as Agents of Change. The goal of the project, run by Associate Superintendent Sartor and Ms. Grange was to create a short compilation video that gathers student voices and lived experiences. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We were able to gather participants from Kingston Secondary School, Granite Ridge Education Centre, and Napanee District Secondary School, and over the past few weeks, those students shared their thoughts and experiences to a variety of prompts. Their voices, representing local student perspectives, are valued and being brought to conversations provincially. This concludes our February ISC report. It was noted that this report is brought forward on a cyclical basis and that Trustees who served during the previous review in 2021-2022 were acknowledged for their work, as the last process involved extensive discussion and adjustments to electoral boundaries.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Trustees were directed to the agenda package, which includes background information on electoral boundaries, legislative requirements, and key timelines related to the upcoming municipal election. It was reported that the Ministry has advised that it will not be issuing a new Trustee determination and distribution report for 2026, therefore, the existing 2022 report remains the reference document. Key dates outlined in the report provide a general timeline for nominations, filings, and voting, noting that specific dates may vary slightly.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Superintendent Young reported that LDSB currently has nine elected Trustee positions, consistent with provincial legislation governing boards with an electoral population between 100,000 and 149,999. Based on current projections, the Board’s electoral population for 2026 is approximately 141,856, and as a result, the allowable number of elected Trustees will not change for the upcoming election. The Board will continue with nine elected Trustees, in addition to the Indigenous Trustee.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Legislative requirements were reviewed, including the Board’s obligation to pass a resolution regarding the designation of low‑population municipalities. It was noted that Limestone has, for several elections, designated the northern portion of the Board as low‑population municipalities in order to ensure reasonable representation, and this approach remains consistent with past practice.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Trustee responsibilities in advance of the 2026 election were outlined, including finalizing the determination and distribution, approving Trustee honoraria for the next term, and appointing a compliance audit committee. <p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Dear Families, </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The Limestone District School Board is deeply saddened to learn of the horrific events that took place yesterday impacting a school and community in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">No words can adequately express our condolences to those affected. Our hearts are with the students, families, and community members who have been directly impacted by this awful event. While there are many national and international events that affect people on a daily or weekly basis, events impacting schools have an impact on everyone attached to schools and education. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Significant events like these, that are in the public eye and heavily featured on news and social media, can have an impact on students and families in different ways. These impacts may look different for each person and be impacted by their source(s) of information and/or media coverage. </span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We are here to offer support. The board’s Educational Services team is available to support students and families as needed. Educational Services has prepared the following tips to help families support students during this time: </span></p><ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Recognize that students may become concerned that something bad will happen to themselves, family, or friends. Explain that safety measures are in place and reassure them that you and other adults will take care of them. </span></li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">If your student is not focused on what happened, avoid dwelling on it or having detailed adult conversations in front of younger students. However, be available to answer questions to the best of your ability. Young students may not be able to express themselves verbally. Pay attention to changes in their behaviour or social interactions. </span></li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">For some, limiting exposure to media coverage or other sources of information may be important, particularly when social media platforms contain significant amounts of misinformation or disinformation. Images of a horrific event can become overwhelming, especially if watched repetitively. Young students may not be able to distinguish between images on television or their screen, and their personal reality. For older students who choose to watch the news or scroll social media stories related to the event, be available to discuss what they see and to help put it into perspective. </span></li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Be aware of your own needs. Do not ignore your own feelings of anxiety and concern or anger. Talking to friends, family members, and mental health counsellors can help. <h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">February 6th Newsletter</span></h2><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We want to thank all students, families and staff for navigating a difficult end to semester one. Losing instructional time is never ideal especially with January receiving an unprecedented number of bus cancellations that impacted EQAO testing, culminating activities and exams. With the first week of semester two completed, we hope that more predictable routines have been established. Most timetable changes should be completed by now, if not, students are encouraged to book an appointment with their guidance counselor ASAP. A return to in person activities also means that play practices for Treasure Island have resumed and the ship will be leaving port from the cafeteria and setting sail to the stage in the main gym. The winter sports season has mostly concluded with playoff action to begin next week.</span></p><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Frontenac Staffing</span></h2><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The changing of semesters always alters the staffing in any high school building. This particular year, Frontenac Secondary School had some significant changes. Diana Truesdell has accepted a vice principal position at Napanee District Secondary School. Duncan Cowan has accepted a vice principal position at Sydenham High School. Shari Ross and Doug Johnston have both accepted a life of retirement and the freedom from teaching and marking math! Their collective contributions to Frontenac Secondary School teaching, leading and coaching have been enormous through their embodiment of what it means to be a Falcon. We will miss their kindness, expertise and values that they have instilled within the thousands of students that they taught. The focus of the morning is to help students navigate strong relationships, with conversations centering around healthy friendships, consent, protection and support. We will be welcoming speakers from community organizations such as the Public Health, Sexual Assault Centre Kingston, TriHealth Therapy, Kingston Police and others. We will also have two of our Adolescent Care Workers present to facilitate discussions. The event takes place on Friday, February 13 during periods 1 & 2, and chocolate will be provided.</span></p><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Digital Awareness & Online Extortion</strong></b></h2><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><img src="/images/a76926e2-ce16-45ce-96ee-3e4c848dde0d?fingerprint=ppb20260205173534" alt="Selfie Defence" width="213" height="284" style="width:213px;height:284px;display:inline-block;float:left"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">It was brought to our attention from an FSS family, that one of our students was recently the victim of an attempt at online extortion. In this case, an individual online claimed that they had mutual friends with the student, and specifically stated the name of our school, which helped establish sense of trust and familiarity. They then requested the student move to another online platform (Telegram), where they proceeded to create AI generated photos of the student, engage in threats, and request transfer of money. We wanted to share a general warning to parents and students about this type of scam/online extortion/criminal activity, as we have since learned that this type of activity targeting teens is more common than we knew. We encourage all families to have conversations at home about online safety and security, and in particular to be careful when there are:</span></p><ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Claims of mutual friends</span></li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Referencing the student's school</span></li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Requests to move conversations to other platforms</span></li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Demands for money or personal financial information</span></li></ul><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">If any families experience this, we strongly encourage you to file a non-emergency report to Kingston Police and https://cybertip.ca/en/ Canada’s National Tipline for reporting the online sexual exploitation of children. Tell a parent, the school, or another trusted person who can help. We hope this story will help raise awareness and appreciate efforts to teach students about online safety at home. <p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Dear Families,</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">As January comes to a close, I want to acknowledge the dedication students and staff have demonstrated as we begin the new year. We have certainly faced challenging weather as winter has thrown the kitchen sink and dirty dishes at us this year, and it is not even the end of January! This has resulted in an inordinate number of inclement weather days this year. Thank you for your continued partnership in fostering safe, caring, and inclusive learning environments across Limestone.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">I have a few updates for you:</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Inclement Weather and Bus Cancellations</strong></b></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">This year we have experienced an inordinate number of bus cancellations. To date LDSB has had around 10 school days disrupted due to bus cancellations, and one day where most schools were closed. Tri-Board Student Transportation Services works closely with people on the ground across the district to assess road and weather conditions, and consults with local meteorologists for up-to-date, local weather forecasts whenever winter weather occurs and/or is expected. Because school buses handle differently than personal vehicles, there are times when roads may seem safe for cars but are not suitable for buses.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Given the size of the district, weather can vary significantly from one region to another, which means cancellations may be necessary in some areas while others continue to operate. We recognize there have been several inclement weather days since returning from the winter break and understand that transportation cancellations can be very challenging for families; however, the safety of the more than 30,000 students who rely on bus transportation each day remains Tri-Board’s highest priority. In fact, Limestone is performing at or above the provincial average in nearly all measures.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">These results reflect the collective efforts of Limestone educators, Educational Assistants, program teams, and school leaders—supported by the ongoing commitment of students and families across our district. The demand for Kingston, and Canada, as a learning destination is rapidly growing. Students from over 15 different countries are here now staying with great homestay families in Limestone. Our International Education team is looking for more families to become homestay hosts to international students.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We currently have 19 students on our waiting list that have applied to Limestone for 2026-2027 and need a home. They range from one semester to one-year stays and are from Germany, Spain, Japan, Brazil, Slovakia, Czechia, Italy, and Denmark.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Host families will be paid a tax-free monthly stipend to host students. All students in the program attend local intermediate or secondary schools and range in age from 12 to 17 years of age.
